EVENDALE, Ohio (WKRC) - In the most dangerous situations in Cincinnati, canines are called in. They are trained to do everything from track bad guys to find bombs and drugs. But the training course was so run down, handlers were worried about their dogs getting hurt. So donors and volunteers changed that. The chain link fence, picket fence, a brick wall, the window; it was all part of the training for Cincinnati Canine Jones and all the other canines from the region who train at the police facility in Evendale. "There have been suspects who think they can hide in drain pipes or crawl underneath a porch,” said Officer John Neal of the Cincinnati Police. The new canine training course has everything Jones might run into on the streets, "Walls that may have to jump over, window simulating point of entry in a building that's been burglarized," said Officer Neal. Tri-Health paid for the obstacle course after purchasing the first female canine and watching her train on old equipment. Tri-Health asked handlers what they needed then gave it to them. The old one was built by handlers a decade ago. Now handlers don’t have to worry about canines running into something on the streets they've never experienced in training. Eads Fencing and Ashcraft Sand and Gravel helped create the new course that will be used by 25 police dogs from all over the Tri-State.
